Rudy

Charles S Dutton as a janitor with a heart of gold inspiring Rudy to go for his dreams! The classic underdog tale of Rudy is nothing with a magical Black man to tell the white kid that he can do it. One of the best and a performance that makes this movie bearable. Inspiring!

The Green Mile

I bring you maybe the only nominee to use actual magic in The Green Mile. RIP to former bodyguard turned star Michael Clarke Duncan who laid hands on Tom Hanks and healed the world for a small time in 1999. Truly deserving. A staple of the genre. #thelastrealmagicalnegro

Bulworth

A dying old white dude politician connects with a street smart Halle Berry and changes his way. Commentary, satire and Halle Berry. Welcome to the club. Also shoutout to BAPs, man. #TheLastRealMagicalNegro

Forrest Gump

Benjamin “Bubba” Buford Blue played by Mykelti Williamson. Deserved two clips. Click to watch on Instagram. #thelastrealmagicalnegro

Bringing Down the House

Bringing Down The House kind of flips the trope. She doesn’t magically appear in his life, The Queen scams him! A funny movie with a cast of legends. #TheLastRealMagicalNegro

Rocky III

This is truly a unique case. The case of Apollo Creed, a standout in the genre. You see in the first two Rocky films, Apollo was not a magical negro, he was the villain and we rarely get charismatic and capable Black villains in a white lead movie. In 3 he was a magical negro and even brought Rock-O to the hood to give him soen special negro Magic. In 4 he was sacrifice and yet the name lives on!

Happy Gilmore

Happy Gilmore. A comedy classic. “A goddamn alligator bit my hand off”. Need I say more?

Driving Miss Daisy

Starting off the Hall of Fame nominations with a classic of the trope Driving Miss Daisy, the comedy that won a Pulitzer Prize… click for a delightful clip!

Hitch

This nominee has special distinction. 1.) it starts as a Magical Negro story. 2.) it turns into a token black friend story. 3,) but the whole time he’s the lead of the movie! And 4.) his romantic lead is a latina. Truly a movie that played in and around all the tropes and became a smash hit. Ladies, Thems and Gentlemen… Hitch.

The Angel Levine

This nominee is lesser known but just as relevant with the magical man being an actual Angel! This one parodies and satirizes the trope while also delivering on the premise. Can you expect anything less from the great Harry Belafonte? This film shows that despite being coined later the magical negro trope was well known even in the 70s. Ladies and gents…#TheLastRealMagicalNegro

Ghost

It’s Ghost a classic with a classic performance from Whoopi Goldberg. She looks so good here.
